Miller Cylindrical Projection

The Miller Cylindrical projection was created by Osborn Maitland Miller in 1942. It is also the more common of the maps as it is an updated version of Mercator map. The Mercator has a more exaggerated scaling of continents, though. This map has limited distortion but is not considered a directional map. The parallels become more distanced as they reach either pole but is modified from the Mercator map that has larger distances between parallels. The Miller Cylindrical projection is essentially the updated, more accurate version of the Mercator map. Northern continents tend to be slightly larger than Southern continents.

Pros:

  • Updated, more accurate map

  • No distortion of latitude towards Equator

  • Good representation of the Globe on a 2D map

Cons:

  • Distortion of continents

  • Distortion of parallels

  • Not a good directional map
